Observe these two citizens using a public discussion forum to address CRT-based curriculum review of 6th grade curriculum in Aiken County Public School District in the city of Aiken, South Carolina.
As a result of a Freedom of Information Act request, a group of Aiken County citizens paid for the right to review the entire 6th grade curriculum, including lesson plans and Social, Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum.
The District provided full access to their range of standard subjects, including a proprietary database used to 'align' lessons with SC State Board of Education standards, but denied access to teacher lesson plans, citing 'lesson plans are not retained by the District, and are therefore not releasable under FOIA regulations'.
Listen to the specifics cited by Mr. Paullin, and Ms. Procaccini as they respectfully but resoundingly ask for access to lesson plans, and increased citizen participation in holding the School principals and teachers and Board trustees in compliance and adherence to District policies, to include SC 2021-2022 State Budget Proviso 1.105, which prohibits using SC monies to teach or administer over Critical Race Theory-based implementation or application within the State and school districts.
This is one example of how citizens can leverage the power of their right to hold elected officials in school boards accountable using the Freedom if Information Act.
All it takes is courage. The courage to stand before a board of elected officials and ask for explanations, to ask for adherence, to ask for oversight, to ask for accountability.
In this case, the courage is on behalf of the children, who are the receivers of official policy, the receivers of school principal nonchalance and disinterest, who are the receivers of each and every teacher's own personal discretion and autonomy - without any official accountability.
Our children will not be subject to school district oppression of their right to unbiased lessons and unaccountable teacher autonomy to teach from the entire Internet of material.
Until next time...De Opresso Liber.
